The name plaque is the piece that visually anchors the baby's room. It sits above the crib, on the door, on the changing table wall. It's the detail that makes the room theirs, not just any child's.
But with so many options (font, size, color, shape) choosing can be confusing. Here's what you need to know to avoid making a mistake.
1. Where will you place it?
The location determines the size. You wouldn't hang a 5 cm plaque 2 meters high. No one would see it.
Above the crib: M (10 cm) or L (15 cm) size. Visible but not dominant.
Wall opposite the crib: XL (20 cm) or a set of large letters. Creates the room's focal point.
Room door: S (5 cm). Discreet, decorative.
Shelf or dresser: S or M, in horizontal format.
2. Which font matches the style?
The font conveys tone. For a baby's room, there are three paths:
Editorial (Fraunces): elegant serifs, medium visual weight. Matches minimalist rooms, neutral palettes.
Clean geometric (Inter, Poppins): modern sans-serif. Matches contemporary rooms, light palettes.
Bubble: curved shape, softer and more childlike. Matches colorful rooms.
3. Color: part of the room, not competing with it
The rule: the plaque can be neutral (matches everything) or an accent (draws attention with elegance). Never the dominant primary color.
White: universal. Works with any palette.
Black: sophisticated, contrasting. Good on light walls.
Brown: warm, earthy. Pairs with beige, sage green, light wood.
Pink: soft, feminine without being obvious. Works with light gray, white.
4. Shape: typographic or bubble?
The bubble shape (rounded lines) has a more childlike readability. Ideal for the early years, but can become dated as the child grows.
The typographic shape is more editorial, timeless. It grows with the child. If you want a piece that will stay in the room until they are 10, choose typographic.
5. Name length matters
Short names (3-5 letters): any size works, even XL.
Medium names (6-8 letters): M size is balanced for most spaces.
Long names (9+ letters): be careful with XL, it can look huge. Consider L or splitting it into two lines.
