When you're buying decorative letters or a custom nameplate in Portugal, you'll find two main options: PLA (3D printed) and MDF (processed wood).
These are different materials with similar prices. The choice depends on three things: aesthetics, maintenance care, and where you'll use the piece.
What is each one?
MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) is processed wood: wood fibers glued and pressed. It's cut by laser or CNC, then painted.
PLA (polylactic acid) is a plant-based plastic, 3D printed layer by layer. The color is already in the material, it's not painted afterwards.
Aesthetics
MDF: painted wood look. Glossy or matte finish, but always reads as a plaque. Typical thickness: 6-12mm.
PLA: faceted (low poly) or smooth surface. Premium matte finish. Adjustable thickness, from light to strong 3D presence.
Winner for minimal: PLA. More editorial, less commercial.
Durability
MDF: sensitive to humidity. Paint can chip or peel over time.
PLA: unaffected by humidity. Color doesn't chip (it's the material itself). Sensitive to extreme heat (above about 50 ºC).
Winner for everyday use: Tie. Both last for years indoors under normal conditions.
Weight and installation
MDF: heavier. For large sizes, it requires screws or strong support.
PLA: Lighter. Can be glued with double-sided tape for almost all sizes.
Winner: PLA, especially for rented walls where you don't want to drill.
Customization
MDF: usually comes in predefined formats. Customization costs more and takes longer.
PLA: each piece is designed from scratch. Size, font, color, format: all custom-made in 1-2 business days.
Winner: PLA.
Sustainability
MDF: uses glues that can release formaldehyde. Difficult to recycle.
PLA: plant-based (corn, cane). Non-toxic.
Winner: PLA, with a clear difference.
Price
In Portugal, prices are similar for small to medium sizes. For large (XL) sizes, PLA can be slightly more expensive due to printing time.
When to choose each?
Choose MDF if: you want a rustic wood look, you'll paint it yourself, or it's for an outdoor sign in a dry location.
Choose PLA if: you want a modern, minimal finish, you'll glue it without drilling, you're thinking of a baby's room or a wedding, or you want a sustainable option.
