PLA is an interesting material. It's plastic, but not a petroleum-based one. It's plant-based, yet stable and durable. It's 3D printable, but as resistant as some resins.
If you're thinking of buying decorative letters made of PLA, this article covers the essentials: what the material does well, what it doesn't, and what care you should take.
What is PLA?
PLA stands for polylactic acid. It's produced from plant sources, usually corn or sugarcane. It doesn't use petroleum, doesn't release toxins during printing, and is industrially compostable under controlled conditions.
At home, it doesn't decompose. It's stable at room temperature, doesn't emit odors, and doesn't change color over time (indoors).
Why choose PLA for decorative letters?
1. Quality matte finish. Matte finish PLA has a premium texture: no gloss, no disposable look. It matches minimalist, editorial, and Scandinavian interiors.
2. Lightweight yet resistant. A PLA letter is lightweight. It sticks to the wall with double-sided tape without falling. It doesn't break easily.
3. Wide color palette. PLA is colored at its origin (not painted afterward). This means it doesn't chip, peel, or change tone.
4. Sustainable. Plant-based and (in our case) made to order, with no stagnant stock.
What PLA doesn't do well
Prolonged direct sunlight. Above about 50 ºC, PLA starts to soften. Avoid it on south-facing windows in the summer.
Permanent outdoor use. It can withstand an outdoor wedding on a dry day. It won't withstand months on a balcony in the rain.
Cars parked in the sun. A car's dashboard can reach 80-90ºC. Not a place for PLA letters.
How to care for the letters
- Clean with a damp cloth, no chemicals.
- Do not submerge in water.
- Adhere with good quality double-sided tape (we recommend 3M VHB for smooth surfaces).
- Avoid walls with high humidity (poorly ventilated bathrooms).
- At home, it lasts for years without changing its appearance.
PLA vs other options
PLA vs MDF: MDF is processed wood, thicker, more rustic. PLA is cleaner, lighter, more modern.
PLA vs acrylic: Acrylic is shiny and reads as commercial. Matte PLA is editorial, premium.
PLA vs metal: Metal is expensive, heavy, requires heavy-duty fixing. PLA is lighter and sticks with tape.
